When to Take Your Pet to the Vet

It’s important to find a good veterinarian as soon as (or even before) you buy a new pet. Some veterinarians specialize in pets categorized as “exotic”. If  you choose a pet other than a cat or dog, be sure your vet is equipped to care for and treat your animal. A simple phone can save time and trouble.

We recommend that you make an appointment with a vet as soon as you can when you bring a new animal into your home. The vet will discuss general healthcare tips for your pets, as well as specifics about vaccinations and when to spay or neuter. Click here for more information on what you need to know and do for that first visit, and here to learn more about building your relationship with your vet.

But aside from well-care, when should visit the vet? Our finned, furry and feathered friends can’t tell us how they feel or when something is wrong. Should you call as soon as you notice something is a little off? According to the American Veterinary Medicine Association, chances are if you are asking the question, the answer is probably yes. Here’s a great video from the AVMA that answers the question “Is this normal?” and common signs to look for that indicate it’s time to visit the vet.
